  • 1 1 ounce packet onion soup mix
  • 2 tablespoon finely chopped chipotle peppers in adobo sauce

  • Add the sour cream, onion soup mix, and chopped chipotle peppers in adobo sauce to a medium bowl.
  • Stir until the ingredients are completely combined and the chipotle peppers are evenly distributed throughout the dip.
  • Serve immediately, or cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to blend.
  • Serve chilled with your favorite potato chips, tortilla chips, crackers, or fresh vegetables.

Notes

For a milder dip: Use 2 tablespoons of the adobo sauce from the can instead of the chopped chipotle peppers. You’ll still get that smoky chipotle flavor with even less heat.
Adjust the chipotle to taste: This dip is smoky with only mild heat, but you can easily adjust it to your preference. Start with less chipotle and add more after tasting, or add an extra spoonful if you want a bolder smoky flavor.
Let the flavors blend: You can serve the dip immediately, but it gets even better after chilling in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. This gives the onion soup mix time to hydrate and allows the flavors to come together.
Make it ahead: This is a great make-ahead party dip. Prepare it up to 24 hours in advance, cover tightly, and store it in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Give it a good stir before serving.
Serving ideas: Serve Chipotle Onion Dip with sturdy potato chips, tortilla chips, crackers, pretzel crisps, or fresh vegetables like carrots, celery, mini sweet peppers, and cucumber slices.
Storage: Store leftover dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Stir well before serving again.
What to do with leftover chipotle peppers: Transfer the remaining chipotle peppers and adobo sauce to a small airtight container and refrigerate for another recipe, or freeze them in small portions for later use.
